New cinematic techniques came along with the noir movement. Fast cutting, discontinuity, jump cuts, and grittier film quality all shined through noir. Godard, one of the most influential directors of all time loved noir and used techniques that changed cinema around the world. Here is a scene from his acclaimed, Breathless (1960) in which he illustrates the jump cut.
In the film Goodfellas (1990) Scorsese illustrates the long take. This scene is critically acclaimed in cinema for being one of the best long takes.
